Emily, (and dear readers)
I, as my big sister role requires of me, have been reading along as you get more and more nervous about the move. Allow me to take a break from my blog, McFargan, to guest post on the topic. :) I've taught at two different schools, and spent summers in another state where I knew no one when I began my studies there. I've done this a few times.
My advice for moving to a new city is pretty simple. This rule will make your life feel a bit better, as long as you continue to remind yourself of the one thing: It takes a good year to get used to a new place. A full year.
What this means is not getting down on yourself for not having many friends right away or for not knowing where things are. It means taking yourself on a date or to the movies and being ok with it for the first little bit, or even being a bit more outgoing in accepting social invitations. Be gentle with your own feelings as you make the transition, because most certainly, after about a year, you will emerge the social butterfly that you have been your whole life with friends you can rely on.
You'll do great. Don't expect miracles; just do your best. And remember, I'm only 45 minutes away! :)
And in the meantime, enjoy the new blog header: as a gift from ME to YOU!
Love,
Liz
